Summer Institute for Blind College-Bound Musicians

Students from around the country come to attend this one-week intensive program to study Braille music, theory, and music technology necessary for the advanced study of music at the college level. After this immersion into an academic and musical experience on a school campus, students come away with new knowledge of resources, with a confidence inspired by practicing college living, and with a network of mentors and friends to turn to for help and encouragement as they continue their education.

The Institute is a program of the National Resource Center for Blind Musicians, a division of MACH, that brings together a staff of recognized teachers and professionals in the field to share their expertise.

The 2009 program will be a one-week Summer Braille Music Institute, held in July at the Overbrook School for the Blind in Philadelphia, PA. Designed for the serious student, the program tailors instruction to each person's need to develop braille music and theory skills, and the use of technology to submit written music assignments. Applicants must have already studied some music theory, be willing to put effort into braille music study, and demonstrate a commitment to use the braille music and computer skills they will learn at the Institute when they return to school. Applicants must also show that they have the independence skills, social readiness and maturity to be a contributing part of a close-knit group. Space is available for six students. Students must request applications by phone or E-mail, or use the form provided on the National Resource Center's web site shown below. The deadline for requesting applications is April 13th, and completed applications must be in the Resource Center office by May 9th.

Options for teachers. School teachers interested in learning should contact the Resource Center to explore opportunities to study and help out during the Institute. Appointments can be made to bring younger students for evaluation and guidance. Visit www.blindmusicstudent.org/summer_institute.htm. Contact David Goldstein at 203-366-3300, Extension 229, or info@blindmusicstudent.org.

Registration/Tuition/Financial Aid

In this section: Registration | Tuition | Financial Aid

Registration
To register for programs at MACH, please call 203.366.3300, ext. 221 for materials and registration forms. A registration fee of $25.00 is required for all applications and is non-refundable. Additional class-specific fees may also be required. MACH reserves the right to cancel or reschedule courses due to low enrollment.

Prospective students are required to make an appointment for an initial interview. This process allows MACH staff members to assess and place students in appropriate settings. Duration of programs vary from 13 to 30 weeks, depending on the specific program. Students can register for certain programs throughout the school year and tuition is pro-rated accordingly. The exception of this is the theater workshop, which closes enrollment after three weeks.

Tuition
Tuition is due at the beginning of the school year.

Financial Aid
We will continue to honor our commitment to provide financial aid to new and returning qualifying families. A limited amount of partial aid is also available to students with demonstrated need. Assistance will be determined on a sliding scale basis. To determine whether your family qualifies for financial aid, the parent, guardian or adult student must provide our office with a copy of income tax return for the previous year, pay stubs for the last two months and/or a social security benefit statement. In addition, an optional payment plan is available, depending on the family's need.

Rules
All program participants are required to adhere to the rules and policies of MACH and its individual programs. Students will also be expected to abide by general rules of good conduct and participation. Any student who engages in behavior which is harmful or detrimental to MACH and its programs will be removed.

Delinquent Accounts

Withdrawal & Refund Information
Registration obligates a student to fulfill an entire semester or year (13-30 weeks) of classes. Notice of withdrawal must be made in writing to MACH registrar. Lapsed attendance from lessons or classes does not excuse you from your obligation to pay for the remainder of the year. Once the registrar has officially placed a student in a lesson/class, the registration fee becomes non-refundable. Tuition funds, if applicable, are determined by the Registrar after consulting with the instructor.

* All tuition paid will be refunded if notice of withdrawal is received at least 24 hours before the first scheduled lesson/class.
* All tuition paid, minus the cost of the lesson or class taken, will be refunded if notice of withdrawal is received 48 hours before the second scheduled lesson/class.
* Students who discontinue after the second scheduled lesson/class meeting are responsible for the semester or full year's tuition fees.

Class Cancellation
The school reserves the right to cancel classes due to insufficient enrollment. In the event that a class is cancelled, a full refund or credit of both registration fee and tuition deposit is issued.
