Westport Artists Join Forces for MACH

Six years ago, then chairman of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Harold Levine received a call from his friend, Westport artist Tracy Sugarman asking if he could arrange for the artist to visit a dance rehearsal. Sugarman was granted the opportunity to spend the day drawing the Ailey dancers.

Recently, Levine contacted Sugarman with the idea of using the drawings to create a poster to celebrate the Ailey II performance on April 4th at the Klein Memorial Theater being given to benefit the Music and Arts Center for Humanity (MACH). Sugarman liked the idea, but felt that the project required a designer. Sugarman called Westport designer Miggs Boroughs, and the team was complete.

The limited edition poster, signed by both Tracy Sugarman and Miggs Boroughs, is being offered for sale to benefit MACH. The framed artist's proof is offered at $500. Unframed posters are available for $150. All proceeds from the sale of the posters will go to the MACH/AileyCamp.

MACH/AileyCamp is a six-week program of dance for middle school children from the greater Bridgeport area. Teachers from the Ailey school teach modern, ballet, jazz, and African dance classes. Additionally, campers participate in classroom discussions on how to deal with peer pressure, interpersonal relationships, sexual responsibility, and health. One of only seven camps throughout the United States, MACH's AileyCamp is celebrating its eleventh season this summer.
